Article: Scientists zeroing in on age of universe Using Hubble telescope, astronomers narrow range to few billion years

Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope announced Thursday that they are homing in on what they believe is a realistic estimate of the age of the universe.

Beyond that question, calculations of the rate of expansion of the universe dubbed the Hubble Constant also could help astronomers predict its destiny.

Using measurements of pulsating stars called Cepheid variables found in a cluster of galaxies 60 million light-years from Earth, the astronomers calculated the universe's age at 9 billion to 12 billion years.

The results come at a time when another group of Hubble astronomers using a different technique calculated a slightly older universe: 11 billion to 14 billion years.
