Article: Federal action uncertain on cheese exchange

Federal officials were non-committal Thursday about whether the government planned any action on allegations that Kraft Foods Inc. may have manipulated prices at the National Cheese Exchange in Green Bay.

On the second of two days of joint hearings by two House Agriculture subcommittees, John E. Tull Jr., the acting chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, said the University of Wisconsin study that contained the allegations largely predated the start of cheddar cheese futures trading on the Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange.

Because of that, he said, the situation would not come under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's scrutiny.
