"All politicians," Abba Eban observed at a party celebrating his
80th birthday last year, "take their decisions on the basis of
national or political interest and explain them in terms of
altruism."
President Clinton is no different, as the latest Iraqi crisis
demonstrates. Ostensibly about the well-being of the Iraqi Kurds,
Clinton's decisions in fact have far more to do with American
politics and the president's view of United States interests in the
Middle East.
In the midst of a re-election campaign against an opponent who has
sought to portray Clinton as a foreign policy lightweight, the
president has now ordered the firing of two salvos of cruise
missiles against military targets ...
