A.H. Heisey & Co., the famous American glassworks, began 100 years ago.

August Henry Heisey worked as a salesman for a Pittsburgh glass company before the Civil War. He served in the Union army during the war and fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. When he returned home, he married the daughter of George Duncan, a glassmaker.

Heisey joined his father-in-law and brother-in-law in the glass company of George Duncan & Sons. They made tablewares, including some famous pressed-glass patterns such as Shell and Tassel.
