Despite a severe winter, Wisconsin's ruffed grouse population is
showing signs of a slight increase, and state wildlife managers are
predicting that the fall hunting season will be at least as good as
the one last year.
Spring drumming counts were up an average of about 1% throughout
the state's grouse range, according to Keith Warnke, assistant
upland ecologist with the Department of Natural Resources Bureau of
Wildlife Management in Madison.
"We are optimistic that it will be a good season," Warnke said.
"Wildlife managers are reporting good brood production in much of
the primary grouse range."
