Measured against the hype, University of Wisconsin freshman
tailback Ron Dayne seemed worthy of the buildup Saturday.
The 250-pounder trotted onto the field in the fourth quarter to a
rousing ovation from the Camp Randall Stadium crowd of 74,279, which
expected great things from Dayne.
He did not disappoint.
With 13 minutes 34 seconds to play, Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez
sent Dayne into the lineup for the first time. The result: five
straight carries, a 23-yard run and a 2-yard touchdown.
"It was fun," said Dayne, who was rated one of the nation's top
10 recruits coming out of Overbrook High School in Pine Hill, N.J.
