The lack of a formal extradition policy between the Menominee
Indian Reservation and neighboring Shawano County encourages
criminals to seek sanctuary with the tribe, a deputy sheriff says.
"There is no longer any extradition policy, so the person is
basically home-free," Lt. Steve Conradt said last week.
Tribal police lack the authority needed to arrest American Indians
on the reservation for off-reservation crimes. And Shawano County
deputies lack jurisdiction on the reservation.
As of last week, the county Sheriff's Department had 680
outstanding arrest warrants. More than half were for suspects
believed to be on the reservation, Conradt said.
