Article: The 'Phantom' A to Z 'Opera Ghost' will stalk the city and stage six weeks

Andrew Lloyd Webber did not invent him. Lon Chaney did not construct him of whole cloth. And even original "Le Fantome de L'Opera" author Gaston Leroux was hardly the first to whisper of his existence.

His brooding shadow will loom large over Milwaukee for six weeks when a national touring company of "The Phantom of the Opera" begins its run July 18 at the Marcus Center, 929 N. Water St. The run continues through Aug. 24.

Rumors of an "opera ghost" have likely existed as long as the opera form itself. The stage is a ripe setting for all manner of intrigue, innuendo and inspiration. Every theater over three years old seems to have a spectre in its spires or a bat in its belfry.
