He long ago abandoned his military uniform, dressing in the simple
long white thobe of the Saudi Arabians, praying on Fridays near his
roomy villa or at the glorious Bukhshan mosque around the corner from
the luxury supermarket that he and other expatriates favor.
At 300 pounds and 6 feet 3 inches tall, Idi Amin, the former
Ugandan ruler whose butchery and buffoonery made him an obscene
caricature of the Third World dictator throughout the 1970s, is
unmistakable, a fixture in this Red Sea city.
While many have sighted him pushing his shopping cart or walking
to prayers and others have gone up to greet him over the years, he
keeps his own counsel, never commenting on the state of the world ...
