Year after year, the Green Bay Packers have refused to follow the
crowd and reach for a defensive lineman in the first round of the
National Football League draft.
They fell into that trap in 1984 with the forgettable choice of
Alphonso Carreker. Since then, only the Packers and Cleveland /
Baltimore haven't selected a defensive lineman No. 1.
Even the two defensive linemen selected in the second round by
the Packers over the last 12 years, Shawn Patterson and Esera
Tuaolo, didn't pan out.
So the Packers have relied on mid-round picks, a waiver pickup, a
much-debated big-ticket signing and a player from football's scrap
heap to assemble a stable of enormous, explosive youngsters that ...
