Despite nearly 70 flights coming and going over Lake Michigan each
day, there is no detailed rescue plan to coordinate Milwaukee County
and U.S. Coast Guard resources in the event a commercial airliner
crashes in the lake, county officials said Thursday.
Stan Schmitt, a county emergency management spokesman, said that
if a large passenger carrier were to crash into the lake, rescue
workers would experience problems similar to those confronted when a
Boeing 747 crashed off Long Island Wednesday night.
"We'd have problems moving people from the water to the land, the
same thing that New York is experiencing," Schmitt said.
