William Rehnquist, the Milwaukee-area native who is now chief
justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, will administer the oath of office
for the newest chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Shirley Abrahamson said Thursday that she asked Rehnquist to
preside at the noon Sept. 22 ceremony in the state Capitol and he
accepted. Although Abrahamson unofficially became chief justice on
Aug. 1, the Sept. 22 ceremony will be the official event in her
honor.
"I have a high regard for (Rehnquist) as a jurist," said
Abrahamson, who became the first woman on Wisconsin's Supreme Court
when she was appointed in 1976. She was re-elected in 1979 and '89.
