Maps and globes made in the 18th and 19th centuries are becoming
more popular with collectors. Perhaps it is because the boundaries
for so many countries have changed. The first printed maps in
England were made in 1573 by Christopher Saxton. He produced an
atlas with 37 county maps and a large country map. The maps were
sold as a set in an atlas or as single sheets.
During the past 150 years most of the atlases were cut apart so
the individual maps could be framed and sold. Therefore, a complete
original atlas is now worth more than $500,000.
The maps were reissued several times. Experts can date the copies
by the minor changes in dates, names and details.
