As a catcher in high school and college, Mike Kinkade was no stranger to getting hit by a baseball.

A foul tip off the shoulder, the hand, the foot or the thigh was commonplace. Maybe that's why the Beloit Snappers third baseman is taking this brush with greatness in stride.

Or should it be a brushback with greatness?

Kinkade, a 23-year-old former ninth-round draft pick from Livonia, Mich., has been hit by a pitch 28 times during the 1996 season, breaking the Class A Midwest League record set by Charles Gipson of the Appleton Foxes in 1993.

Gipson, however, accomplished the feat in 135 games. Kinkade reached it in the 91st game of the season, Wednesday night at Peoria.
