Long ago, the odor of burning watercress was thought to drive away
snakes and help treat the mentally ill.Folklore aside,
watercress does have a kind of magical quality: It can liven any
meal with its peppery flip.
It's easy to understand why watercress is such a spicy plant.
It's a member of the mustard family, a group of greens with pungent
flavors and aromas. Watercress fits right in that house.
Watercress is a favorite with backpackers and campers because the
spreading plant grows wild in moving streams. And when meals come
freeze-dried or in a can, some fresh greens are a welcome change of
pace.
