Article: Hutu Rebels Blamed In Burundi Massacre; 150 Civilians Killed Near Bujumbura

A group of at least 1,000 Hutu rebels killed 150 people today in an attack on a village and military camp near Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, a senior military commander said in Burundi.

The commander, Col. Jean-Bosco Daradangwe, said Burundi's Tutsi-dominated army has stepped up operations to hunt down the rebels, who attacked at 4 a.m. and engaged the army in an hour-long battle near the Bujumbura airport.

Daradangwe described the attack as the biggest by Burundi's Hutu rebels, who have been fighting the army since 1993. "We are hunting them down. We are stepping up operations with more troops and I have no doubt we will catch up with them," he said in a telephone interview ...
