Q: I have a 70-year-old shag bark hickory that is not producing
nuts. They appear to start forming and all I get is a stem-like
structure. Is there a cure for this?
A: The cool, wet weather this spring also affected your hickory.
Nut trees depend on the wind for pollination to occur. Wet weather
during blossoming results in poor pollination and subsequently
little or no fruit development. Warm breezy weather during bloom
time is the solution. Lets hope we have it next season.
Q: You mentioned not throwing meat scraps into the compost pile.
What about potato, apple and banana peelings?
A: All plant waste make great additions to the compost pile. This
