Wisconsin's grandest building, the state Capitol, will have a
grand remodeling bill about $87 million before an ambitious
rehabilitation project is finished.
The undertaking involves more than just restoring the public
spaces in the Capitol, such as the old Grand Army of the Republic
Hall, the Assembly Chamber, the Senate Chamber and the ornate
Governor's Conference Room.
The sometimes-criticized project is transforming the rest of the
statehouse into an air-conditioned, computer-friendly office
building for about 1,600 state employees.
"We're trying to balance the preservation of a historic building
with the needs of a modern seat of government," project manager
