Elvis Presley gave rock 'n' roll its heart and attitude, its
blue-collar ethos, its rebellion, its sense of sexual glamour and
adventure, its playfulness and excitement.
Ten years later, Bob Dylan gave those values the gift of an
articulate mind. He changed rock 'n' roll to rock and made it a
force for social and political change. He wrote lyrics with a
poetic and narrative force that forever changed the standards by
which rock artists would be measured.
In the 1970s and '80s, Bruce Springsteen merged those personas in
a way no other artist has before or since.
