Shops closed, public transportation came to a halt and most
Israeli Jews stopped eating and drinking Sunday evening for 24 hours
of soul-searching and prayer on Yom Kippur.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for national unity,
making a rare reference to the assassination of his rival, Yitzhak
Rabin, a year ago.
"On this day, we remember that our strength is in the unity of the

hatred of brothers, in mutual understanding and not violent

minister," Netanyahu said in a holiday message broadcast on Israel
radio.
