OUTLOOK: The Badgers are seeking a ninth trip to the NCAA tournament, and they want to reclaim the Big Ten title after finishing second to Minnesota last season. "The Big Ten is the No. 1 thing that makes us tick now because of the competitive nature of the rivalries," Duerst said. A difficult non-league schedule includes matchups at Notre Dame and William & Mary and a home game against North Carolina. If the Badgers can spring an upset or two, they could be ranked in the top 10 by the end of the season and primed for a push in the expanded 32-team NCAA tourney. Midfielder Marci Miller is gone, having taken her considerable
soccer skills to Southern Methodist.
But University of Wisconsin women's soccer coach Dean Duerst
actually posted a net gain of one Miller during the off-season, when
talented twin sophomores Mandi and Mara Miller transferred to UW
from Clemson.
Yes, the beat goes on for the Badgers, who advanced to the second
round of the NCAA tournament last season before losing to eventual
national champion Notre Dame. Despite a rugged schedule featuring
games against the Irish and pre-season No. 1 North Carolina, Duerst
says he believes his team can improve on its 14-6-4 record of last
year.
