OUTLOOK: UWM's emphasis on recruiting the Milwaukee area has paid off handsomely in recent years. Colvin (New Berlin Eisenhower) and Luedke (Wisconsin Lutheran) are both redshirt freshmen who may contribute this season, along with true freshman Bernstein (Cedarburg). Bennett is not afraid to entrust the goalkeeping to Schmidt, a former Racine Horlick standout who faced just nine shots in limited playing time last season. "He had a good pedigree as a high school soccer player," Bennett said. "He's had a little taste of college soccer, and now he's ready for a three-course meal." The Panthers were impressive in a 2-0 exhibition victory over a team from Freiburg, Germany. Bennett will motivate his team to play for him, and the Panthers know a favorable early season schedule is in their favor. UWM could win the MCC regular-season title for the first time in its three seasons in the league. AUGUST: 29 at UW-Parkside, 4 p.m. (exhibition). "We've talked before," said forward David Marshall, one of five returning seniors. "We're going to do this season and leave the chattering to a minimum."

UWM ranked as high as 20th in the national coaches poll last season and at 13-2 late in the year appeared poised for a run at the NCAA tournament. Instead the Panthers dropped four of their final six games, including a 2-1 overtime loss to Detroit in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference semifinals.
