OUTLOOK: Injuries and a touch of overconfidence combined to sabotage Marquette's lofty hopes last season. A 3-1 exhibition victory over Notre Dame earlier this week, helped by newcomer Watzka's two assists, could signal a rejuvenated Golden Eagles offense. Marquette is expected to be a strong contender in Conference USA, along with St. Louis, Alabama-Birmingham and South Florida. "We have a deeper bench," said Solberg, a pre-season all-conference choice. "Almost anyone can step off the bench and keep the same level as the person who stepped out, and that's something we haven't had." Solberg has started in all 65 games since arriving at Marquette as a heralded freshman from prep soccer power Brookfield East. He has collegiate totals of nine goals and 12 assists (30 points) at Marquette. "Every year I set a goal to make others look good," Solberg said. He should get the chance in '96. 9-8-4 campaign in 1995. The addition of junior striker Drew Watzka,
a transfer from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, could provide
just the jump-start the offense needs.
"If they score the chance, particularly the first one, then they
relax and play," Adlard said. "If they miss several of those, then
a midfielder's got to score, a defender has to put more into the
offense and that's when the wheels come off."
Before last season, the ...
