The oddities apparently having exhausted themselves at this
thoroughly exhausting Wimbledon, sanity seemed to return to Centre
Court on Saturday.
Rain gave way to once-familiar blue skies, and Arantxa Sanchez
Vicario gave way to the ever-familiar Steffi Graf.
While all about her were losing theirs over the course of the
fortnight, the top-seeded Graf kept her head and her body and her
game together. And when the women's final was over Saturday, she
found herself hoisting her seventh championship plate after beating
Sanchez Vicario, 6-3, 7-5.
Graf held it high above her head; she rested it beside one hip,
then beside the other; she clutched it in one hand, and then she
squeezed it tight ...
