U.S. soldiers confronted Bosnian Serb tanks near the hideaway of
war crimes suspect Gen. Ratko Mladic on Saturday, locking in a
standoff that ended only when the Bosnian Serbs backed down.
The heavily armed confrontation was one of the tensest yet for
U.S. forces in the Bosnian peacekeeping mission, and emphasized the
international community's growing determination to crack down on
Mladic and his fellow war crimes suspect, Bosnian Serb leader
Radovan Karadzic.
The NATO-led forces in the Han Pijesak area mostly U.S. troops
spotted the tanks and armor outside Mladic's compound Friday, and
went on alert when the vehicles failed to move away by midday
Saturday, Capt. Mark Van Dyke said.
