When the tragedy and triumph that marked the Atlanta Games ended with the dousing of the Olympic flame Sunday night, the 100 members of the Sydney Organizing Committee who were watching took a deep breath.

They had enjoyed intimate, even unprecedented, access to the inner workings of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. They shared the joy of organizers over frenzied crowds and world-record performances. They felt the anguish and sadness over the Centennial Olympic Park bombing. They watched the embarrassment over transportation and technological foul-ups.
