Eddie Murray stood at his locker, pulled on his baseball gear, and prepared to head out to the County Stadium field for batting practice.

How, he was asked, would it make you feel to hit your 500th home run and join Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the only players to reach that mark and also record 3,000 hits?

Murray stopped his slow walk down the tunnel, looked upward as if he was considering the question, and the Orioles' designated hitter did something unusual:
