Article: FCC approves specs for digital television New broadcasts will gradually replace today's analog TV service

The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the standard for the next generation of television, formally beginning the nation's transition to digital, high-definition television, the first fundamental change in television service in almost 50 years.

The first digital televisions are not expected to go on sale until early 1998, and the first high-definition broadcasts will not begin until then. But the vote began a process that will affect every American TV viewer.
