Curtis Lewis Jr. is surrounded by angels. A black angel with pink wings, holding a gold star, points toward the heavens from a table near his hospital bed. It was sent by a stranger.

His girlfriend, Amanda, has visited five times a week, four hours each day, since Nov. 11 when four youths beat 14-year-old Curtis into a coma. She pinned a gold angel to a curtain.

The young girl, whom Curtis had called "Sunkist," also put angel stickers above his bed and on the inside of his bed rail, so Curtis can see them when he wakes up. "They're like guardian angels," she says softly. " 'Cause I miss him so much." Curtis is awake, in a way. He opens his eyes sometimes but has trouble focusing. ...
