Balancing bundles of food and clothing on their heads, Rwandan
refugees who previously refused to return home began their trek back
to Rwanda after 21/2 years in Tanzania.
By early Saturday evening an estimated 400,000 refugees had snaked
along the steeply sloped road that brought them to a short bridge at
Rusumo Falls and back into Rwandan territory.
Rwandan and Tanzanian officials kept the border open later than
usual as many of the 10,000 refugees expected to cross Saturday night
straggled over long after sunset. Roads leading from the border were
starting to clog with refugees, although some stopped by the roadside
to rest for the night.
