Article: Lewis, Shurmur reach crossroads; A History of Promotions Here is a list 12 Super Bowl-winning teams and the enormous amount of success that their offensive and defensive coordinators found on the job market: 1984, SAN FRANCISCO Offense: Coach Bill Walsh ran the offense himself and didn't have a coordinator. Quarterbacks-receivers coach Paul Hackett was head coach at the University of Pittsburgh from 1990-'92. Defense: Coordinator George Seifert replaced Walsh as head coach in 1989. Secondary coach Ray Rhodes became head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995. 1985, CHICAGO Offense: Coordinator Ed Hughes, who was 58, remained with the Bears until he was demoted and quit in 1989. He had been head coach of the Houston Oilers in 1971. Defense: Coordinator Buddy Ryan was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1986-'90 and the Arizona Cardinals from 1994-'95. 1986, NEW YORK GIANTS Offense: Coordinator Ron Erhardt, who was 54, had been head coach of the New England Patriots from 1979-'81. Defense: Coordinator Bill Belichick was head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991-'95. 1987, WASHINGTON Offense: Coach Joe Gibbs ran the offense himself and didn't have a coordinator. Joe Bugel, assistant head coach-offense, was head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 1990-'93. Dan Henning, offensive assistant-receivers, was head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1989-'91 and at Boston College from 1994-'96. Defense: Although Larry Peccatiello had the coordinator's title, the unit was directed by assistant head coach-defense Richie Petitbon. Petitbon succeeded Gibbs in 1993. 1988, SAN FRANCISCO Offense: Again, Walsh served as his own coordinator. Quarterbacks coach Mike Holmgren became head coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1992. Receivers coach Dennis Green was head coach at Stanford from 1989-'91 and has been head coach of the Minnesota Vikings since 1992. Defense: Coordinator George Seifert succeeded Walsh after the Super Bowl. 1989, SAN FRANCISCO Offense: Coordinator Mike Holmgren got the Green Bay job in 1992. Defense: Coordinator Bill McPherson, who was 58, remains with the 49ers as an assistant. "He was kind of a Bay Area San Francisco guy and I don't think he really wanted to move," Holmgren said. "He was a good coach and certainly capable." 1990, NEW YORK GIANTS Offense: Erhardt remained the coordinator. Running backs coach Ray Handley succeeded Bill Parcells after the Super Bowl and lasted two seasons. Receivers coach Tom Coughlin was head coach at Boston College from 1991-'93 before becoming head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Defense: Belichick was the coordinator. 1991, WASHINGTON Offense: Again, Gibbs served as his own coordinator. Offensive assistant-passing game coach Rod Dowhower was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 1985-'86 and Vanderbilt University from 1995-'96. A significant percentage of the offensive and defensive
coordinators from the last 12 National Football League championship
teams have used the Super Bowl as a launching pad to land a head
coaching position in the NFL or with a major college.
If the Green Bay Packers fulfill their role as Super Bowl favorite
and win it all on Jan. 26, will offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis
and defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur gain the NFL head-coaching
jobs they have coveted for years?
With anywhere from seven to 10 jobs expected to open, there will
