As winter weather continues across Wisconsin, arctic air masses
will be getting stronger in their source region of northern Canada
and Alaska.
These bitter cold masses of air are a common occurrence to our
north. Given a big enough mass of air and the proper upper air wind
flow, subzero temperatures and wind chills visit our area.
With the very short days and sun angle to our north, snow tends
to cover the ground during most of the winter. Especially with clear
skies, surface air temperatures get colder and colder during December
and January.
Because cold air is very dense, these arctic air masses tend to
slide down to the northern part of the United States. Also, if the
