When I mentioned to a friend that I was writing a series of
articles about baking cakes, she gave me a bewildered look, as if
that were something everyone already knew. Then comprehension
dawned. "Oh, you mean from scratch, like my mother used to bake, not
from a mix." I assured her that after trying these cakes, she would
be as comfortable making them as her mother had been and would
discover that baking them really is "a piece of cake."
Winter, when one feels like spending time in a nice warm
kitchen, is the perfect time to try your hand at cake baking or to
try out new baking ideas. Bake just one of these cakes and you'll
