The sounds of the Civil War are heard today thanks to some antique
instruments, Civil War uniforms and the 1st Brigade Band.
"We can take a little bit of history and make it come alive for
people, make it something people really understand and appreciate,"
said Dan Woolpert, the bandmaster. "I think we do a good job of
that."
The 1st Brigade Band is a reincarnation of the 18-man tin horn
band from Brodhead, in Green County, that marched off to the Civil
War. It performs the rousing patriotic marches of the War Between
the States, the sentimental ballads, the graveside laments. Band
members encourage toe-tapping and hand-clapping.
