Disgusted and buffeted from trying to tackle University of
Wisconsin tailback Ron Dayne, the University of Minnesota's
defenders seemed to surrender as Dayne's carries mounted.
Dayne's hammer-like rushing style in a school-record 50 carries
produced 297 yards Saturday, just 7 shy of Billy Marek's all-time
mark of 304 yards set in a cold rain against Minnesota 22 years ago
at Camp Randall Stadium.
"I noticed that," Dayne said when asked about Minnesota's
dwindling defensive gumption. "After a while, they started acting
like they were going to tackle me and they'd dive toward the ground.
I was happy when they started doing that."
