Gov. Tommy Thompson was in the Camp Randall Stadium press box
Saturday, but there was no truth to the rumor that he was preparing
legislation to change the spelling of the surrounding district to
Dayne County.
It would be enough after the University of Wisconsin's 45-28
victory against Minnesota that extraordinary freshman Ron Dayne,
whose 297 yards and three touchdowns in a school-record 50 carries
raised him to yet another level in UW lore, made his 51st tote with
the Axe.
Paul Bunyan's Axe, awarded to the winner each season of this
longest running series in Division I-A football, is customarily
hoisted by seniors on its victory lap around the stadium.
