The art of gilding coating an object with a thin layer of gold
is centuries old and remains popular today. Gold leaf transforms a
plain object into a brilliant, lustrous work of art, and it lasts
for years and years.
All the supplies you need for gilding are available at good
art-supply and craft stores. In addition to gold leaf, look for
silver and copper leaf and alloys, also called composition metals.
Here are some guidelines:
The Basics: Gold leaf is extremely thin 250,000 sheets is about
an inch thick. The leaves, about 3 to 5 inches square, come in
books, separated by sheets of tissue paper.
