It's time for the design community in the city of Milwaukee to take a stand. The Nov. 2 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article on City Hall Square illustrates the fact that design is no longer in the hands of the trained professional. The proposal to bring residential units to downtown Milwaukee is welcome. A vital downtown will not exist until there is a significant residential community with all ages and incomes.

But there is an apparent lack of understanding regarding what is good and appropriate. The design for City Hall Square (a $28.1 million housing development planned for downtown) cheapens one of the most significant pieces of architecture the city has to offer its citizens. ...
