The City of West Allis has decided to stop using health
maintenance organizations and create its own health insurance plan
to cover 1,100 city workers and retirees.
The city is in an unusual position because it owns West Allis
Community Hospital, which is operated by Aurora Health Care.
Weeks ago, the split between PrimeCare and Aurora Health Care
stranded city employees covered by PrimeCare. Employees with
PrimeCare can use West Allis Memorial only for emergencies, or by
paying a higher portion of the cost.
On Friday, city officials briefed leaders of the unions
representing city workers on its plans, which have been in the works
for nearly a year.
