In summer camp talent shows where other kids played the accordion
and twirled batons, Mike Welch did what he knew best.
"My talent was naming all the heavyweight champions back to John
L. Sullivan," the West Allis man recalls.
He is not your typical boxing fan. For one thing, Welch has never
seen a single fight, having been born blind 43 years ago. But that
hasn't stopped him from acquiring the kind of expertise about boxing
that would astonish fans in the ringside seats.
Love of boxing runs in his family. Welch's grandfather was a
witness to Jack Dempsey's slaughter of Jess Willard in their 1919
heavyweight title fight and won $200 betting on the underdog
Dempsey.
