A shot goes off the rim and Clare Barnard goes after the rebound
the only way she knows.
Hard.
A player goes flying, sprawling on the floor as Barnard pulls
down the ball.
It's a teammate. In practice.
"It's just natural competitiveness," Barnard said. "Everybody in
practice is always dodging my screens or whatever. It's not that I'm
trying to be rough. I'm even trying to take it easy a lot of times,
in fact.
"I played with an older brother, and you had to be tough. So it's
just totally natural for me, I guess."
Matthew Barnard was 51/2 years older, a basketball star at
Menomonie High School. Later, he was an All-American baseball
player at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
