Gov. Tommy Thompson and Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar are moving toward
a deal to restore Illinois' financing for Amtrak's
Milwaukee-to-Chicago trains, Edgar's spokesman said Tuesday.
At the same time, Amtrak slashed weekday fares by 52% on half the
trains on its Hiawatha line, the latest in a series of moves to boost
ridership and keep the service alive.
The current financing agreement among Amtrak, Wisconsin and
Illinois expired at midnight Monday. The trains, however, are still
running while negotiations continue on a new financing deal. A
source said last week that Amtrak and Wisconsin have reached an
agreement in principle to keep the trains running for a year. State
