Article: Deal could lead to expanded jail Washington County seeks OK for contract talks with U.S. Marshal Service

The first tentative overtures are being made on a deal that could lead to an expanded Washington County Jail, with room for federal prisoners.

Washington County officials plan to ask the county's Public Property and Safety Committee for permission Monday to discuss a contract with the U.S. Marshal Service.

Under such a contract, the Marshal Service could agree to pay a portion of construction costs in exchange for the right to a yet-unspecified number of beds for the life of the contract. "It would be a way for Washington County to help offset the costs of additional construction to the jail," Sheriff Robert Schulteis
