A Canadian Auto Workers strike against General Motors Corp. neared
the end of its fifth day with no resolution in sight and a growing
number of layoffs at GM and other companies dependent on the idled
plants.
GM said it was sending home about 800 workers at a Ypsilanti,
Mich., transmission plant in mid-shift Monday night because the
plant supplies Canadian plants that are on strike. That brought to
at least 1,850 the number of GM layoffs in the United States: 1,050
workers at a Buffalo, N.Y., plant were laid off Monday morning.
A meeting between Canadian Auto Workers and GM negotiators ended
in a screaming match Monday, with neither side giving an inch.
