As a man of few words will sometimes do, Ron Dayne recently made a
revealing symbolic gesture that spoke for him.
It was late in the fourth quarter of the game against Stanford,
and the University of Wisconsin was clinging to a 7-0 lead. So
unrelenting was the Cardinal's eight-man front that the Badgers had
just 22 yards rushing.
In came Dayne, a battering ram with rack-and-pinion steering, for
his first meaningful road test on a college field. From the UW
45-yard line, the 260-pound tailback was given the ball on eight
consecutive plays.
He ran by, over and through an assortment of bruised and
bewildered Stanford players for a total of 54 yards, demoralizing
what had been a hardened ...
