Despite the many problems it has caused them over the years,
major-league owners have this tendency to leap before they look.
Thus, they placed the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the
American League, with no consensus on how to realign the league to
accommodate them. Geography tells you that Tampa Bay belongs in the
AL East, but it's the AL West that needs another club to balance the
15-team circuit.
A committee has been established to study realignment (shouldn't
this have been done by now?), with hopes of finding a solution by
the end of June. League bylaws prevent teams from being moved to
another division against their wishes, which means a remedy must be
found that is amenable ...
