U.S. Attorney Thomas P. Schneider ignored advice from veteran
prosecutors in his own office in helping spring money launderer
Harry Kaufmann early from federal prison, newly released court
records show.
The records show that career prosecutors rejected Kaufmann's
request for a sentence reduction before Schneider and his top deputy
quietly started negotiations with Kaufmann's attorney that got
Kaufmann out of prison 17 months early.
The records also lend support to a top federal agent's allegations
that Schneider and First Assistant U.S. Attorney Barbara Berman bent
the rules by going around veteran prosecutors to reduce Kaufmann's
prison term by one-third.
