In his strongest statement yet on the subject, U.S. Agriculture
Secretary Dan Glickman said Tuesday he supported ending the practice
of using Green Bay's National Cheese Exchange to determine the price
farmers are paid for milk around the country.
"The goal is to find a different method . . . to price milk in
this country," Glickman said after a 11/2-hour meeting with Gov.
Tommy Thompson, seven members of the state's congressional
delegation and 11 Wisconsin dairy farmers.
"Under administrative guidelines, we have to get public comment
first, but we indicated our desire to move away from the cheese
