Reaction to the announcement that Green Bay's National Cheese
Exchange will close ranged from elation to skepticism Friday, but
most experts said the move's real impact on Wisconsin farmers would
depend on what happened next.
"We're elated that they're moving," said Bill Brey, a Sturgeon Bay
dairy farmer and president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union, which was
a strong supporter of state legislation that would have regulated
the exchange and prohibited unfair trading practices.
The closing was announced Thursday.
Trading on the exchange will end April 25, and a new cash market
for cheese will begin May 2 at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, one
