Marseille
Marseille, France's main port, is the oldest city in France,
founded 2,600 years ago by Greek traders. Inside its famous Cosquer
cave is evidence that people lived here 28,000 years ago. It is
known for art, opera and ballet and has the most theaters per capita
of any city in France.
Most famous native: Bouillabaisse, a fish dish with onions,
garlic, olive oil, tomatoes and saffron.
Cup-related oddity: l'Olympique de Marseille, the local team, is
the only French club to have won a European Cup.
World Cup venue: Stade Velodrome, which was renovated for the Cup
to hold 60,000 people.
